With increased energy efficiency and being able to produce a wide spectrum of colors, LED technology allows for great versatility when it comes to lighting for particular applications. As this technology improves, advancements to visual clarity and the overall appearance of objects under different light sources has become more in demand. As such the color rendering index, or CRI, is a crucial tool when looking for high-quality LED lighting.

CRI measures the trueness of a particular color under a particular light source when compared to natural light. This is measured on a scale of 0 - 100, with colors that look muddy and indistinct at 0 CRI, and 100 CRI being the truest value for a particular color. This is especially useful in residential lighting, where accents such as art pieces can be highlighted and shown in their truest color. Sign lighting also benefits from this, as a company logo or other visual element will be easier to see under higher CRI lighting. Studies also show that high CRI LED lighting might also be Better for Your Health, as it also provides the benefit of improved mood and overall health, as higher CRI more closely resembles natural lighting.

Fluorescent lighting is known to cause migraines and eye strain over a prolonged period of exposure. Part of this is actually due to the relatively low 50-70 CRI emitted. By contrast, LED lighting, such as our T5 High Output LED Tubes for fluorescent tube replacement, typically produces 80-90 CRI with even higher values on newer fixtures! As a result, this leads to better visual contrast and color accuracy, and less eye strain overall.

A common misconception is that a higher CCT must also have a higher CRI. While this may have a minor effect, the truth is that there are high CCT fixtures just like fluorescent lighting that still produce a low CRI. With this in mind, it is always best to factor both CRI and CCT as equally important when choosing LED lighting, especially in residential applications.
