What Is Color Temperature?
Surprisingly, the color temperature of a light bulb has nothing to do with how hot the bulb gets! Color temperature is actually a method of describing the color characteristics of light. LED color temperatures have various ranges, including Warm, Cool, Natural and Daylight. Each color temperature has its own distinct look and feel.
The LED Color Scale: Know Your LEDs!
The color temperature is measured in Kelvins (K). The higher the Kelvins, the cooler the temperature, and the lower Kelvins, the warmer the temperature. The range for Kelvins for LED lights is from 2700K to 6500K.
When shopping for industrial LED lights, do you feel overwhelmed with the wide variety of colors, ranging from soft yellows to vivid whites? This is precisely where understanding color temperature comes into play. Warm LED lights tend to appear yellow, red or orange. On the other hand, Cool lights tend to be blue or greenish. In between the two, led lights are at their whitest.
When replacing LED lights, consider the effect new lighting will have on the ambience of the room. This is important because lighting can impact moods and emotions, and can even have a major impact on sleeping cycles. In general, most Americans prefer to have cooler lights in offices, workrooms, showrooms, etc., while the warmer tones are preferred in homes.
The LED Color Temperature Scale
As mentioned earlier, the Kelvin LED color temperature scale ranges from 2700K to 6500K, and the variation of color temperatures lying within that range can be classified as follows:
- Warm White Light lies between 2700K - 3500K. It results in a calming effect, making these warm lights perfect for bedrooms, living rooms and fine dining restaurants.
- Natural White Light lies between 3500K - 4500K on the Kelvin scale. It’s cool, clean, and mimics sunlight the most. These natural white light LEDs are great for areas that normally lacksss natural lighting, such as garages, storage rooms, etc.
- Daylight White Light lies between 5000K-6000K on the Kelvin scale. Similar to the natural white light, this light mimics clear daylight and works great for security lighting and lighting in retail locations.
- Cool White Light ranges from 6000K and 7000K. Bright, white and impossible to ignore, these lights work very well in commercial areas, as well as industrial ones.
